Tyler Shewey, Esq.

The California bar exam is a strange animal–for some people, everything clicks the first time; for others it takes more effort. In his books, WINNIN’ TIME! and The Trigger List, Steve has reviewed what has been actually tested and credited in previous California bar exams, and has written a blueprint for successful memorization. As a tutor, Steve is responsive, patient, thorough and knowledgeable; every aspect of his program is geared toward hitting the issues, and only the issues, that generate points. While there are no certainties on the California bar exam, using Steve Harris’ study materials, and hiring him as a tutor, will dramatically improve your chances of passing the California bar exam. – Tyler Shewey, Esq., passed the July 2009 Cal Bar Exam

Maggie Buchan, Esq. (law school valedictorian)

I began to utilize WINNIN’ TIME! one year into my law school experience, after meeting Mr. Harris at a school-sponsored writing workshop. I believe I received the highest grades in both my Evidence & Criminal Procedure courses because I employed the “boilerplates” for each respective subject found in WINNIN’ TIME! Needless to mention, I used those same boilerplates on the July 2009 administration of the California Bar Exam, which I successfully passed. I believe WINNIN’ TIME! is one of the best resources in which a law student can invest because not only are you provided succinct yet detailed boilerplates, Mr. Harris has devoted great time and attention to explaining the writing approaches he suggests. Thus, not only are you provided first-rate law school and bar exam writing templates, they make sense! I strongly recommend WINNIN’ TIME! to all law school students and bar exam takers looking for a extraordinary writing resource.

If you are a law student having issues with identifying issues on your law school exams, please invest in The Trigger List! Through his unique approach, Mr. Harris provides students with words and phrases to help identify issues that will easily earn points. I strongly recommend The Trigger List to all law students looking for a comprehensive plan to identify and attack law school and bar exam issues. Good luck! – Maggie Buchan, Esq., Cal Northern SOL Class of 2009, Valedictorian, passed the July 2009 Cal Bar Exam

I have no doubt that Steve Harris’ program is the reason I passed the California Bar Exam.

The large, national bar preparation programs were only of limited usefulness to me. Generally speaking, I found the hours-long lectures, even by nationally-acclaimed law professors, to be mind-numbing and unhelpful.

Steve’s program is much more about “active learning.” From day one, I was writing essays. Essays and essays and more essays. Steve individually graded 15 essays for me – there were on average over 5 pages of feedback for each. Steve has designed a system (which is nicely laid out in his book, WINNIN’ TIME!) to quickly and efficiently create passing answers.

Steve also individually graded several Performance Tests for me. Steve’s list of tips and tricks for the Performance Tests is truly impressive.

Finally, Steve’s one-of-a-kind issue spotting system (called the Essay Review Method, which is outlined in The Trigger List) really improved my ability to locate and analyze issues that seem to re-emerge with every examination. I give Steve Harris’ program my highest recommendation. Please do yourself a favor and make the next Bar Exam your last.” – Rob W. Lawton, Esq.

Lia Juhl, Esq. (new parent!)

I realized that I never dropped you a line to let you know that I passed the July 2009 Bar Exam. I know you are probably swamped with retakers for Feb bar, so I will (try to) keep this short. I just wanted to send you a heartfelt thanks for all your help, your awesome book and your positive attitude. Before I attended your seminar at Cal Northern prior to starting to study, I was convinced that I was not going to be able to pass since I had just given birth in February. Your attitude was inspiring. When you told me to just use your book, get the rules down and that I could do it, I actually believed it. But, I have to tell you that without your book there is NO WAY that I would have passed.

This was what I did to study… I would start a subject by creating my rule statements from your book. Then I would listen to Barbri and insert in all the little bits of info that was important to me under the rule statement…you know, the things that I had forgot from school so that I could remind myself when I was studying. Finally, I would put in any bits of info that was left that was from PMBR that would help me recall the rule statement. I was doing the Barbri IPOD because I could only study in bits. I know that this sounds horrible, (and I feel bad for my classmates that busted their butts and didn’t pass) but I only studied for 4-6 hours a day. That was all I could manage with a baby. I know that the time that I did spend studying was not spent spinning my wheels. I got in and got out because I didn’t have time to mess around. One change I did make last minute (because I didn’t read the beginning of the book early enough!!) was to fit in the issue spotting that you recommended in your book. That meant that I had to smoosh even more into my very short days, but I got it done and I passed.

I thank you for your positive words of wisdom and support from one new parent to another. I thought that having a baby would be a handicap in studying, but it turns out it was actually an advantage. It made me use my valuable time wisely. I thank you immensely for writing your book so that I could get through it. If I would have had to create my own rule statements I would have had a mental breakdown!!!

Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I wish you the best and know that I owe you completely for getting me thru that bar. Please let all new parents know that it can be done…with your books!!! – Lia Juhl, Esq., Cal Northern School of Law, passed July 2009 exam

JVF, Esq.

When I first contacted Steven Harris I had just recently found out I did not pass the July 2009 bar, it was a stressful time to say the least. During the course of our conversation I told Steve of my woeful essay and performance test scores. Steve assured me that he could help. Then I told Steve that my wife was pregnant and that my daughter was due to be born the week before the February 2010 Bar, bad timing, yet Steve reassured me that he could help me so long as I followed a personalized plan he would craft for me.

Through the use of WINNIN’ TIME!, and Steve’s constructive and detailed critiques of my essays and Performance Tests, I began to understand the streamlined and simple method of writing passing bar answers. Steve had prepared a three-day window during the middle of the memorization period to allow me to be with my wife during the birth of our daughter. Sure enough, the Tuesday before the bar my little girl was born. I called my mother to let her know everyone was healthy and then I called Steve. Steve congratulated me and then he pressed me to stick to the personalized schedule.

I followed my personalized schedule to the T, including using the window of time to be with my wife, my newborn daughter, and my three-year-old son. I finished the last few days of the memorization period then took the bar. I had slept for the minimalist of hours before the bar, yet through Steven Harris, WINNIN’ TIME!, and The Trigger List I had a well developed plan of attack. Three months later I found out I had passed the California bar.” – JVF, Esq., McGeorge Alum, passed the February 2010 Cal Bar Exam.

Thanks Steven for your coaching . I have recommended you to several of my friends repeating the California Bar exam. Only those of us who have taken this bad boy numerous times really get the flavor of the bar exam. And what a bitter pill it is to swallow. Nauseating. But you helped me to have fortitude and perseverance. It was fantastic to be sworn in tonight.

I was very skeptical to use Steven as I had spent thousands on tutors and other reputable bar reviews. All of these other systems did help in some ways but Steven helped me the most by far. So, anyway, I took a leap of faith and worked with Steven.

My Biggest Problem Issue Spotting:

I did the week long Issue spotting techniques in The Trigger List, even though I feared it was not going to be the best use of my time especially so close to the exam. I was proved wrong! Midway through the week I started to see many patterns played out for the subjects. The bar is somewhat predictable about the issues it tests. If I knew these inside and out it made sense that I could pass! I think Steven was instrumental in my passing last July 09. His PR is fabulous. His evidence and civ pro works. His method is very doable. Just follow it and keep going.

Reading Issues Slowly:

My problems were numerous on the essays and the PTs. Steven’s method cut straight to the heart of the essays and PT for me. He focused me on what I had to write and gave me a set time frame I learned to follow. I like his method and it was very workable. I found out through this journey I have a reading problem. I read slowly and can’t comprehend thoroughly when I try to read quickly, this really proved to be quite an impediment to passing the PTs as it lead me to feel so anxious that I was running out of time and this lead to poorly organized writing which is the kiss of death for the PT. But Steven helped me cut through the fat and right to the meat and potatoes of the task at hand. His method taught me how to finish within the time frame.

Scheduling of Study Time:

I was so afraid I did not have the necessary time as I had to work so I almost did not take the July bar. But Steven’s techniques focused me and really lead me through it. I felt well-prepared though I only had six weeks and worked for four of them part-time.

Memorizing Black Letter Law:

Steven gave me a way to memorize. He is great for those of us with learning disabilities because he understands our need for more time to let the rules sink into our heads. His structure over the last 10-11 days was very good. It got me through it and it was very good for me to quickly doodle the mnemonics on my scratch paper for the subject I was being tested on during the actual bar exam. It calmed me. It gave me an approach so I would see necessary issues. I never felt better while taking the Bar because I knew the law. It also helped me on the MBEs tremendously. All the other bar prep courses left me drifting during the last two weeks before the bar but Steven provided the necessary structure. It was crucial. YOU WILL PASS THE BAR with these tools. You do not need anything else. Just follow what he says to do.” – Norah Lamond, Esq., passed the July 2009 California Bar Examination.

Chris (Berkeley Law)

Learning the law is not the only necessary condition for passing the Bar. Recognizing and internalizing the testing and grading format is equally important. Steven teaches both masterfully. He doesn’t just tell you what you need to know; Steven also teaches you a system that maximizes your ability to organize and write passing essays and performance tests under the stress and time constraints of the Exam. Essentially, Steven hands you a parachute and survival kit that can make the difference between getting your law license or having to re-take the Exam. — Chris, Berkeley Law, Ph.D. student, adjunct professor and father of two toddlers, passed the July 2009 Cal Bar Exam

Myles Montgomery, Esq.

On the final minute of the last day of the July 2010 California Bar, I slammed down my pencil and thought, “Now that’s how you take a Bar exam!” No doubt I would not have been able to have that experience without Steve’s help. The Point Generator System works! As a repeat taker, I had plenty of experience in what does not work. For the first time, I had road map for how to attack anything the Bar examiners wanted to throw at me. During the exam, I even smiled when I recognized the traps that I used to fall for. Steve’s system gave me a structure and format that boosted my confidence. I would recommend his system for first time takers, repeat takers and law student alike. Thank you, Steve, for the Calweasel Point Generator System. – Myles Montgomery, Esq., McGeorge alum, passed the July 2010 Cal Bar, 4-month program.

Jerome A. Clay, Jr., Esq., passed the July 2019 California Bar Examination

If the Bar Exam was a hidden code, The Trigger List is the code breaker. After using this book, my issue-spotting skills improved tenfold. The skills I learned from this book helped me pass both the California Bar Exam and Washington State Bar Exam! – Babach Lau, Esq., passed July 2008 Cal Bar AND Washington Bar Exams!
